Orion Advisor Services, LLC ("Orion") enables RIAs to outsource time-consuming back-office tasks and refocus on building revenue. Orion was formed not upon identification of a market niche but out of necessity to address the needs of its sister company, CLS Investment Firm. In the late nineties, CLS faced an impending dilemma: the firm's growth was being constrained by its existing portfolio management platform, an off-the-shelf system which was struggling to process $1 billion in assets and over 10,000 client accounts.

An analysis of the industry's leading software and back-office outsourcing vendors failed to identify any single provider who could accommodate not only the firm's volume, but also their data consolidation and customer service requirements. They undertook the development of its own solution and, at initial rollout in 1999, created the company known today as Orion as a separate firm dedicated to offering the newly-created platform to the entire RIA industry.
